If a Cite While You Write command returns you to your EndNote library or displays an error in Microsoft Word, check macOS automation permissions. macOS may require permission for EndNote and Word to control each other.
For macOS 13 (Ventura) and above
- Open the Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation. You may need to scroll down to find Automation.
- Find EndNote and allow it to control Microsoft Word, if Word is listed beneath it.
- Find Microsoft Word and allow it to control EndNote, if EndNote is listed beneath it.
- Return to Word and try the Cite While You Write command again.
The app names may include an EndNote version number. If an app does not appear under Automation, try the command again and choose Allow if macOS asks for permission.
For macOS Monterey and earlier
Open Apple menu → System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Automation, then check the same permissions.
You would need to make sure that both the options of 'EndNote ## beneath Microsoft Word’ and ‘Microsoft Word beneath EndNote ##’ are checked.
With this automation turned off, the Cite While You Write functions will not work.
