This article explains how to identify your NVivo version. There are two scenarios:
1) Find out if you have the correct version installed, before activating NVivo.
2) Find out with version you have currently installed and activated.
1) Find out if you have the correct version installed, before activating NVivo
In order to be able to successfully activate NVivo, you will have to download and install the correct installation file. If you have just purchased your license, or a seat was assigned to you, the correct download link will be in your onboarding email. But you can also find all installation files in the myLumivero Portal: How do I download NVivo?
In Windows:
Go to Settings - Apps - check the name of the application. The latest version is called "NVivo 15" and has a square shaped application icon. If it has a round icon it is either called "NVivo 14" or just "NVivo" for NVivo 13/R1/2020, the two previous versions.
Click in the app to reveal the version number: NVivo 15 = 15.0.0; NVivo 14 = 14.23.2; NVivo (13/R1/2020) = 20.7.1
In Mac:
Go to Finder - Applications - check the name of the application. The latest version is called "NVivo 15" and has a square shaped icon. If it has a round icon it is either called "NVivo 14" or just "NVivo" for NVivo 13/R1/2020, the two previous versions.
Right-click on the app to reveal the version number: NVivo 15 = 15.0.0; NVivo 14 = 14.23.2; NVivo (13/R1/2020) = 20.7.1
2) Find out with version you have currently installed and activated
- NVivo 15, 14 and 13/R1/2020: On the start screen of NVivo click - About NVivo
- NVivo 12 and older: On the start screen of NVivo click File - Help - About NVivo
A dialogue box opens showing:
-
- version/release number (including info on installed updates)
- license key number (not usually required; most end-users activate via their myNVivo account, see Activating NVivo)
- Days remaining (until the license expires)
The release number as well as the first numbers of your license key tell you what version you have installed.
See examples below:
Release | License key starts with | NVivo version |
14.23.0 | NVT14 | NVivo 14 |
1.7.1 | NVT20 | NVivo R1 (2020) |
12.6.1 | NVT12 | NVivo 12 |
etc. |
Hence, if the first characters of your license key contain a 12 or 11, this means you have NVivo 12 or NVivo 11 installed.
The first letters of your license key tell you what type of license you have installed.
See examples below:
NVD - Demo version
NVT - Time-limited version
NMT - Time limited Mac only
NVP - Perpetual license
NMP - Perpetual license Mac only
NSS - NVivo Server
