1. How do I get an EndNoteOnline Premium account?
The only way to get an EndNoteOnline Premium account is by purchasing an EndNote (desktop) license (new, upgrade or student license).
When you buy an EndNote (desktop) license, you can create (new), upgrade (free/Basic to Premium), or extend your EndNoteOnline Premium account. This happens automatically when you enable/sign up for an EndNoteOnline account via your EndNote (desktop). (see below)
An EndNoteOnline Premium account allows you to sync and share your library with others and has unlimited storage space for your library (PDF attachments and references).
1.1. Create or upgrade your account
To create (new), upgrade (free/Basic to Premium) or extend (period) an EndNoteOnline Premium account, open your EndNote (desktop) and choose:
- on Windows; EndNote: Edit > Preferences > Sync > Enable sync > Sign up
- on Mac; EndNote: EndNote > Preferences > Sync > Enable sync > Sign up
2. How long does an EndNoteOnline Premium account last?
The short answer is 2 years (minimum). If there is a long period between EndNote (desktop) new versions, the premium time might last more than 2 years. So the short answer is a minimum of 2 years, but it depends on how often new versions of EndNote are released.
Please note that if you have a volume/site license for EndNote (desktop), the period starts from the date every individual user signs up for the EndNoteOnline Premium account via their EndNote (desktop) license.
3. How can I extend my EndNoteOnline Premium account?
The only way to extend your EndNoteOnline Premium account is to purchase a new license or upgrade to the latest version of EndNote (desktop) and enable/sign up via your new EndNote license.
4. EndNoteOnline Basic vs EndNoteOnline Premium
The main difference is that a premium account gives you unlimited storage capacity. Basically, you can sync as big a library as you want.
Learn more about the differences in features between EndNoteOnline Basic and EndNoteOnline Premium here: EndNote and EndNoteOnline comparison chart
4.1 Share groups
Please note that you can sync your local EndNote (desktop) library and share groups of references with an EndNoteOnline Basic account (EndNoteOnline: Organize > Manage my Groups > Manage sharing). But you cannot use the EndNote share feature to share the whole library with others (File > Share... (library). You are also limited in the number of references and the total size of attachments/PDFs.
Please also note that PDFs/attachments will not be shared (only reference data) with the group sharing feature. PDF/attachments are shared with the EndNote: File > Share... (library) feature only.
4.2 EndNoteOnline Premium account gets downgraded to Basic
If your EndNoteOnline Premium account gets downgraded to Basic you will still keep all your references and attachments/PDFs in both your local and online library - even though the library exceeds the limits for the Basic account (you would not be able to add any new references/attachments if limits are reached though).
5. Log in to your EndNoteOnline account
You can log in to your EndNoteOnline account via any web browser. No need for EndNote (desktop) to be installed on your computer to view and edit your online EndNote library.
6. How to check your EndNoteOnline subscription status
Please note that if your EndNoteOnline Premium has expired, your account gets downgraded to EndNoteOnline Basic.
