Changing your EndNote and EndNote Online, Web password

Summary

From 12 February 2026, EndNote Online/Web passwords must be changed every 180 days.

This requirement applies to your EndNote Online/Web account, not to the EndNote library stored on your computer. If your password expires, your local EndNote library remains available, but Sync, Share and other online services may stop working until you reset the password and update it in EndNote desktop.

EndNote Online/Web use the same login credentials.

Quick resolution

If your password has not expired

Change the password while your current password still works.

  1. Go to www.myendnoteweb.com.
  2. Sign in with your current email address and password.
  3. Go to Options > Password.
  4. Enter and save your new password.
  5. Sign out and sign in again to confirm that the new password works.

Then update the password stored in EndNote desktop as outlined below.

EndNote on Windows

  1. Open EndNote and your library.
  2. Go to Edit > Preferences > Sync.
  3. Confirm that the correct EndNote Online email address is entered.
  4. Replace the old password with the new password (use copy and paste).
  5. Save the changes and run Sync (if you use sync).

EndNote on macOS

  1. Open EndNote.
  2. Go to EndNote > Settings/Preferences > Sync.
  3. Confirm that the correct EndNote Online email address is entered.
  4. Replace the old password with the new password (use copy and paste).
  5. Save the changes and run Sync (if you use sync).

If your password has expired

If the password is more than 180 days old, you may be unable to sign in or use Sync and other online services.

You may see errors such as:

  • “Invalid email/password. Please try again.”
  • “The username/password specified is not valid.”
  • “Server.AuthenticationToken.invalidUserCredentials.”

Reset the password online first:

  1. Open the EndNote Online/Web sign-in page.
  2. Select Forgot Password.
  3. Enter the email address registered to your EndNote Online/Web account.
  4. Open the password-reset email.
  5. Follow the link and create a new password.
  6. Sign in to EndNote Online/Web with the new password to confirm that it works.

Password-reset links expire after one day. Request a new link if necessary.

After resetting the password, update it under Sync in EndNote desktop using the Windows or macOS steps above.

Important notes

  • Password expiry does not delete, corrupt or damage your local EndNote library.
  • The EndNote Online/Web password cannot be changed from EndNote desktop.
  • If you use EndNote on several computers, update the Sync password on each computer.
  • You may also need to sign in again on EndNote for iPhone or iPad and EndNote add-ins for Word, Word Online or Google Docs.
  • If you do not receive a reset email, check your Spam or Junk folder and confirm that you are using the email address registered to the EndNote Online/Web account.
  • If EndNote reports “No account exists for the specified email address”, that address is not registered to an EndNote Online/Web account. EndNote product registration and creation of an EndNote Online/Web account are separate processes.
