If your EndNote CWYW add-in/toolbar in Word suddenly has gone missing, please follow the steps below to get it back.
Please note that if you have installed EndNote recently and the CWYW is not there/has never been in your Word, please click here for support article about how to enable the EndNote CWYW add-in in your Word.
Solution 1, summary
Please make sure you have updated EndNote with the latest updates.
- EndNote: Help > Check for Updates
- Word: File > Account > Office updates
Please make sure you Word is not set to disable all add-ins.
- Word: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Add-ins
No checkmark on "Disable all Application Add-ins", and also no checkmarks on the other two options here "Require Application Add-ins..." and "Disable notification...".
Solution 2, disabled items
Word 2007/2010/2013/2016 for Windows. Please see this support article for earlier versions of Word.
- Word: File > Options > Add-ins.
(Word 2007: Office button (top-left) > Word Options > Add-ins) - Choose Disabled Items in the Manage drop-down menu (bottom-left), and then click the Go button.
- Click/Select any EndNote item(s) and click the Enable button.
Solution 3, customize ribbon
With Word 2010/2013/2016, the Ribbon tab may also be unchecked. Click on the File menu and select Options. Click on Customize Ribbon and Check EndNote if it is unchecked. Click OK to display the EndNote tab in the Word Ribbon.
Solution 4, enable COM add-ins
Please follow the steps below to enable EndNote tools in COM Add-Ins:
- Word: File > Options > Add-ins.
(Word 2007: Office button (top-left) > Word Options > Add-ins) - Choose COM Add-ins in the Manage drop-down menu, and then click the Go button.
- Select EndNote Cite While You Write (If it is unchecked), and then click OK.
Solution 5, update
If you still do not see the tools or you are getting an error message, make sure you have updated EndNote and Word with the latest updates. (EndNote: Help > Check for Updates, and Word: File > Account > Office updates)
Restart your machine once the update has been installed, and do the following to configure EndNote X7 or later.
- Browse to the EndNote Program Files folder on your computer (Press Win+E to open Windows File Explorer, and then navigate to your EndNote program folder).
64-bit Machines: C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X7-9\
32-bit Machines: C:\Program Files\EndNote X7-9\ - Run the "Configure EndNote.exe" utility (double-click the Configure EndNote.exe file in your EndNote program folder to run it).
- Make sure "Configure EndNote components" is selected and click Next.
- Select Cite While You Write add-in for Microsoft Office and click Next.
- Click Finish.
Note: You might get a message saying the configuration was cancelled.
Open Microsoft Word and look for the EndNote X7/X8/X9 tools in the ribbon.
Administrator -> All Users installation
These solutions are symptomatic of installations by an administrator account for All Users (EndNote installed by an administrator for all users).
Solution 6, wrong account
- Launch Word in Admin-mode = Right-click the Word.exe file and choose "Run as administrator".
- Word 2016: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\Word.exe
- For Office 365 (Word 2016): "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WINWORD.exe
- Word 2013: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\Word.exe
- Word 2010: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\Word.exe
- Word 2007: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\Word.exe
- Navigate to Word: File > Options > Addins, and choose COM add-ins in the Manage dropdown menu > Go.
- Remove the EndNote Cite While You Write add-in.
- Completely close Word.
- From the EndNote X9 installation folder (C: Program Files (x86): EndNote), run the "Configure EndNote.exe" file, ensuring your user (You, not admin) is the active logged-in profile on your computer. Configure EndNote.exe should allow you to reinstall just the Cite While You Write a portion of the EndNote installation without admin rights.
Solution 7, lastly
If Configure EndNote.exe does not provide the tools, this counter-intuitive solution might work.
Having removed the EndNote functions installed for all users by running Word using "Run As Administrator"… open Word once again, using "Right-click > Run as Administrator". Navigate once again to Word: Options – Addins – Manage COM Addins. And manually direct Word to load the EndNote Cwyw.dll from the Common Files\ResearchSoft\CWYW\19\ folder.
Counter-intuitively, this can resolve sticky EndNote CWYW installation issues.
