How to use Find Full Text in EndNote
Step 1 – configure EndNote preferences
- Open EndNote.
- Windows: Edit > Preferences
Mac: EndNote > Preferences - Select Find Full Text.
- If your institution provides access:
- Enter OpenURL path.
- Enable Authenticate with URL (ask your librarian for details).
- Click Apply > OK.
Step 2 – Select references to search
- Highlight the references in your library.
- Go to References > Find Full Text > Find Full Text
(or click the Find Full Text toolbar icon).
Step 3 – EndNote PDF search results
EndNote will search for and attempt to download the articles. The left panel will display:
- Found PDF – Full-text successfully retrieved.
- Found URL – Link to article available.
- Not Found – Article not retrieved automatically.
Manually attach PDFs (if needed)
- If full text is not found, download the PDF manually.
- Drag & drop into the reference OR go to
References > File Attachments > Attach File.
Best practices for maximum retrieval success
- Run the retrieval directly connected to your organisation's network (not via VPN or proxy).
- Ensure your institution’s OpenURL and authentication settings are correct.
- Use accurate, complete reference metadata for better match results.
- Prefer publisher-provided or repository-stored PDFs.
