Important information about the new EndNote X9.3.1 and later for Windows

This new version of EndNote has a new 64-bit database format and takes advantage of the 64-bit architecture if available, though a 64-bit system is not required. The X9.3.1 version also restores cross-compatibility for EndNote libraries that have been updated to X9.3 on Mac.
When you open an existing library in version X9.3.1 for Windows, it will create a converted version of the library for use with this new database engine. The original library will not be changed, so you can continue using it in version X9.2 or earlier.
Please use sync to move your data across systems and versions.

You cannot open an EndNote X9.3.1 library in EndNote X9.2 or earlier, on Mac or Windows! Instead, use Sync to move your data across systems and versions. 

Below are the instructions for updating to the latest EndNote X9

1. Check what EndNote version you have

  1. Open EndNote
  2. Click on Help > About EndNote
  • If this reads EndNote X9.3.3 you have the latest version of EndNote installed and don't need to do anything. 
  • If this reads anything else you have to update.

2. Try Autoupdate first (does not work for some versions)

  1. Close all programs and turn off any background software, such as virus protection software.
  2. From within EndNote, click on Help > Check for Updates... then follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. Once the process is done, click on Help > Check for Updates... to see if there are any more updates to run.
  4. Click on Help > About EndNote
    If this reads EndNote X9.3.3 you have the latest version of EndNote installed and don't need to do anything more. 

3. Manual Update - instructions for Windows

Check your current version:

  1. Open EndNote
  2. Go to the "Help" Menu and choose "About EndNote"
    If this reads EndNote X9.3.3 (Bld 13966), you have the latest version of EndNote installed.

For EndNote X9.0, X9.1, X9.2 and X9.3:

Download the latest EndNote X9 update by clicking here.
Quit EndNote and run the downloaded file.
The next time you open EndNote Go to the Help Menu and choose "About EndNote".
If this reads EndNote X9.3.3 (Bld 13966), you have the latest version of EndNote installed.

 

EndNote X8 and earlier users for Windows

To keep working in EndNote X8 will e.g. stop you from moving libraries between Windows and Mac and send libraries to colleagues using the new EndNote X9.3.1 or higher (except by using sync).
