NVivo relies on third-party codec software to decode media files. If compatible codecs are not installed on your computer you will not be able to import some files even if they are in supported formats.
The error "Media file is not a recognized format" indicates a possible codecs issue and can can be resolved by
- exporting the file through Quicktime Player or Handbrake on a MacOS
- installing codecs on Windows
Below are some other factors that can cause this error:
1. A Media source file that is saved on an encrypted drive.
Solution: It should be moved to a local unencrypted drive.
2. An external sound card connected to the system. (Mac)
Solution: disconnect the sound card and try the import again.
3. Special characters such as # in the file name. (Mac)
Solution: remove special characters from the file name and try the import again.
