NVivo versions are identified by a major number (the number before the decimal point, e.g. version 11 or 12, or release 1) and a minor number (the number after the decimal point, e.g. the 5 in version 12.5 or release 1.5). See Identify NVivo version number to identify the version number of your installation.
Projects created in older major versions can be opened in newer major versions—e.g. you can open version 12 projects in NVivo release 1—the older-version project file is copied and the copy formatted for the newer version—the original file is not changed.
Projects created in newer major versions cannot be opened in older major versions—e.g. you cannot open release 1 projects in NVivo version 12.
IMPORTANT Due to database improvements, NVivo release 1.6 is like a major version in terms of compatibility—you cannot open release 1.6 (or following) projects in NVivo release 1.5 or earlier. Release 1.5 and earlier projects are copied and upgraded if opened in NVivo 1.6 or later.
NOTE – Trialling NVivo
Version compatibility is important for users trialling the latest version of NVivo—if you are trialling NVivo (release 1) you can open a version 12 project in it (copied and upgraded) but any changes you make in the copy cannot be saved in a format that you can open in version 12.
NVivo Collaboration Cloud
Find more info here
Collaboration Cloud is an NVivo add-on module allowing teams to collaborate on NVivo projects. It stores projects securely in the cloud, providing a space to pass work between team members—project managers upload master projects that collaborators download and work on, and then the collaborators upload their versions for the project managers to download and merge back into the master.
Collaboration Cloud is accessed from NVivo Windows and NVivo Mac (Release 1). Only project files created in Release 1 are compatible, and it is not possible to work cross-platform (with both Windows and Mac) on single projects. All users require internet connections.
