If you have to enter references manually you only need to enter the information EndNote requires finding additional data for the reference. You can then use the feature Find Reference Update in the References menu, and EndNote will try to find and automagically add the missing information to your reference(s).
Entering data manually into EndNote is more an exception than the rule, as you can find most references online and can import them directly into EndNote.
Nevertheless, there might be instances where you need to enter references manually. If you have to enter references manually you only need to enter the information EndNote requires finding additional data for the reference. You can then use the feature Find Reference Update in the References menu, and EndNote will try to find and automagically add the missing information to your reference(s).
- Select the reference(s) you want to check for reference updates, by Ctrl+clicking the reference(s) in your main library window.
- Choose References > Find Reference Updates...
You can also right-click selected reference(s) and choose Find Reference Updates... from the pop-up menu.
Based on your data EndNote will search in multiple literature databases to find any missing information. For example, it searches for the PMID field in PubMed and for the DOI in PubMed and CrossRef. If necessary, Web of Science or PubMed is searched for the accession number, the author, the year and/or the title. EndNote will show you all the information it can find for that specific reference.
