Due to scheduled maintenance, some services like the NVivo Portal will be offline on Feb 27 [more info: NVivo: System Downtime Notification - Feb 27, 2021]
A codec is a software that is used to compress or decompress a media file. There are many different codecs in use today. At the same time, these codecs are used in container formats like mp4. Here we show how to solve problems with the import of media files.
Codecs are a bit complicated.
A codec is a software that is used to compress or decompress a media file. There are many different codecs in use today; some commonly used codecs was installed on your computer when the operating system or media player was installed. Other codecs may automatically be installed when you connect a digital camera, video recorder or another recording device to your computer.
Many producers of hardware such as video cameras use their very own codecs.
An Mp4 file is what’s called a multimedia container format, meaning that it can contain many different codecs.
NVivo supports the mp4 format but relies on the codecs installed on your computer. Most likely you miss the correct codec on your computer.
Below are codecs that the producer of NVivo ”recommends”.
To try and resolve the issue you are experiencing in NVivo, I suggest that you download and install a codec pack such as:
https://k-lite-mega-codec-pack.en.uptodown.com/windows
If the above package does not resolve the issue, try downloading and installing any of the ones listed at the below link:

After installing the codec pack, close out of NVivo and reopen it and try importing the file again.
If the issue persists after installing the codec pack, try another codec pack and if that does not resolve your issue, please provide us with the file that you are trying to import for investigation.
