Below we have provided steps to follow to recover your NVivo project in the Temporary location for both Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Windows Vista and Windows 7
Please go to the following location: C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Temp
You may be required to Show all hidden files and folders if the AppData folder, is not visible.
To show all hidden files and folders:
- Click on Organize -> Folder and Search Options
- On the 'Folder Options' dialogue, click on the View tab and check 'Show hidden files and folders' option
- Uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)' option,
- Click on the Apply button and click OK.
Now, look for a file that has the same name as your NVivo project, but with a '.tmp' file extension, this should then be '<project name>.tmp.nvp'.
If you are able to find this file, to ensure you have a backup copy of your project, I'd suggest you make a copy of it first. You should rename this project file to '<project name>.nvp'. You can do this by right-clicking on your mouse and selecting the 'Rename' option. Then try opening this project file.
If the issue persists
We need to look at NVivo error logs and investigate the issue further. Error logs are usually located in your ‘My Documents’ folder for Windows XP or your ‘Documents’ folder for Windows Vista/Windows 7, and are named like ‘err<date>T<time>.log’.
Please locate any of these files and attach to your reply. These files will provide us with full details of the error, and enable us to investigate the issue and provide you with appropriate advice.
