EndNote is disabled in Word based on not signed certificate/untrusted publisher. Here we explain why and what to do.
Normally you have two options
- Do not require application add-ins to be signed by trusted Publisher
- Add e.g. Clarivate as a trusted publisher
ENABLE NON-SIGNED ADD-INS
This can be necessary if you are using e.g. an old software for which the certificate has run out.
In Word 2016/365 click on File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings…
Then uncheck the below box and restart Word.
ADD CLARIVATE AS A TRUSTED PUBLISHER
In Word 2016/365 click on File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings…
Check the below box.
Restart Word and the below message should appear for EndNote X9.
Click on “Options”. This should show you all disabled add-ins in a dialogue box like one for EndNote X9 below. This shows you the expiration date for the digital signature for the add-in.
Just choose “Enable all code published by this publisher” and EndNote’s toolbar in Word should again be activated. You might need to restart Word for the changes to take effect.
